VINTAGE COLUMN: MUM CAN I BORROW THIS? By @SilviaAlbanese / 50s PIN-UP BIKINI VS 80s HIGH LEG BIKINI
Hey Vintage lovers!
Welcome back girls!
Are you ready for summer ?
Keep sunscreen and sunglasses at close hand because we are going to talk about bikinis!
As we know, fashion is circular and trends always come back, so we’ll compare two models of swimming costumes that have come back in our closets recently…
“50s PIN-UP BIKINI vs 80s HIGH LEG BIKINI”
Undisputed star of the summer, the bikini sees the light in 1946 and the first to wear it was the French dancer Micheline Bernardini.
During the 50s the bikini covered and wrapped up quite a lot. The model was meant to enhance the female body. The biggest bikini enthusiast was Marilyn Monroes: her body fitted perfectly in the high waist pants and the balconette. Thanks to her this piece of clothing entered the drawers of all the women in the world. Around the same time pin-ups became icons and the erotic dream of many Americans.
The classic pin-up bikini is still a must-have, as it suits all bodies.
High waist swimming suits are perfect for whoever has a bit of belly to hide and apple or pear shaped girls.
In the 60s and the 70s the bikini shifts into the classic triangle and it becomes popular among girls (swimsuit preferred mainly by older women).
During the 80s the bikini changes again and the V slip comes with its sensual shapes, together with animal patterns and fluorescent colors. This bikini reaches the peak of success during the 90s, together with the high-waist trend and the swimsuit. Do you remember Pamela Anderson in Baywatch?
This model looks sensual because it underlines the shape of the bottom and the legs look longer, so even the shorter among us will look more slender.
The choice is yours, girls: what’s your choice of bikini for this summer?
A warm hug,
