VINTAGE COLUMN: THE RETURN OF AN ICON, THE SADDLE BAG BY DIOR
here we are with our Vintage-date!
Today we continue with the saga of the great maisons’ iconic bags, so it’s impossible not to mention the Saddle Bag by Dior.
This is a cult item for fashion lovers, dear to many women who defined it a “must have” bag, something you can’t renounce and the greatest piece in the closet. Do you remember it? It has the shape of a horse saddle (strongly inspired to the horse riding world) and it’s closed by a ‘D’ shaped golden buckle. It’s meant to be worn around your shoulders. It was the first bag to show the logo of the French maison, lauching a trend that was soon followed by other brands.
The Saddle is probably the most representative bag signed by maison Dior. And yet, it only dates back to the end of the 90s, designed by one of the most controversial, eclectic and talented designers: John Galliano.
Ever since its first appearance, during a fashion show in Paris in October 1999, the Saddle Bag stayed in the minds of all the die-hard fashion lovers and of all those who dreamed watching Dior’s shows signed by Galliano.
Among the first versions, we remember the blue denim one, the one in camel suede and the classic: the one covered with Dior’s logo.
Prima tra tutte è stata Carrie Bradshaw a sfoggiare la Saddle Bag per tutta la terza stagione di Sex And The City. The first to flaunt a Saddle Bag was Carrie Bradshow during the whole third season of Sex And The City. Then came it-girl Paris Hilton, the Destiny’s Child, Lindsay Lohan and many other stars, caught on camera in the streets of New York and Los Angeles with the legendary saddle on their arms.
Today, almost twenty years later, we can affirm that the Saddle Bag is still a real it-bag, brought back to trend by Beyoncè, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and many other models and bloggers.
The bag comes back with a contemporary touch and becomes “larger and sturdier”, as the creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri explains. The French maison presents the bag in several versions now: a leather one, available in more colors, a second one in patchwork with “peace and love Dior” written on it and another one, with hand-sewn beads and various colors.
Are you madly in love with it, but your budget is not enough for the latest version? Don’t worry, the Saddle Bag is the rich bounty of a real treasure hunt around luxury vintage shops or websites!
